Coleman Hawkins: The Coleman Hawkins Collection 1927-56 (CD: Acrobat, 2 CDs)Coleman Hawkins: The Coleman Hawkins Collection 1927-56 (CD: Acrobat, 2 CDs)
Coleman Hawkins was a hugely influential exponent of the tenor saxophone in jazz, being widely regarded as the first artist to establish the instrument as an essential component of the genre’s sound. Beginning his career in the early days of jazz in the late ‘20s, he became a major figure during the swing and big band eras spanning WWII, but also made a significant contribution to the bebop scene into the 1950s. His distinctive but highly adaptable style and sound enabled him to perform over the years in small bands and large orchestras alike both as sideman, leader and featured soloist, and this collection draws on examples of all those elements of his career, from his early recordings with Fletcher Henderson’s Orchestra in 1927 through to bebop sessions alongside lush recordings with strings in the mid-‘50s. it’s a great value 48-track 2-CD , and along the way, there are contributions from many great names of the genre, too numerous to list here, but including Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Glen Miller, Benny Goodman, Cozy Cole, J.J. Johnson, Charlie Christian, Benny Carter, and many more. It’s a worthy addition to the Fabulous label’s Jazz Legends series. (Acrobat Music)

Coleman Hawkins: The Middle Years- Essential Cuts 1939-1949 (CD: JSP, 4 CDs)
In 1939, after 5 years in Europe, the Hawk returned to the US, not as a faded star, but as a soaring monarch. This was a classic period for the tenor legend Coleman Hawkins. After he returned form Europe in 1939 he embarked on a stunningly creative and successful recording career both under his own name and with other bandleaders.

The recording of Body & Soul was a particular milestone as well-a true gold plated jazz classic which is of course included here. This collection charts his progress through the decade, when he dazzled audiences and fellow musicians alike. This set is superbly remastered and packaged. (Proper Music)

Coleman Hawkins: Rainbow Mist (CD: Delmark)
Hawkins was out to top himself on the tune that had become so identified with him, Body and Soul. Thus Rainbow Mist came into being. Both are masterpieces. His sound alone - fuller than in 1939 - is a thing of beauty...Woody'n You is the main reason why this is considered the first bebop recording date...a strong whiff of something new in the air. Coleman Hawkins: Soul (CD: Prestige- US Import)Coleman Hawkins: Soul (CD: Prestige- US Import)
The "daddy" of the tenor saxophone was a man whose playing contained a majesty and vitality until illness finally slowed him just prior to his death in 1969. This date, made in 1958 when Hawkins was in his fifties, finds him in the company of Kenny Burrell and Ray Bryant. This is not surprising because from the time of his ascendancy to the jazz hierarchy, he always sought out the best of the young musicians.

"Soul" was a much-abused term in jazz circles, but it never suffered in the hands of a giant such as Hawkins, whether he was blowing an earthy blues like the title number; the gospel-tinged "Sunday Mornin'"; or another one of his high-watermark interpretations of a standard--"Until the Real Thing Comes Along." And there is the rhapsodic, personal version of "Greensleeves." But then, Hawk was forever a master of balladry. (Fantasy, Inc.)
