Freddie Hubbard: Groovy (CD: Solar)
The complete original Freddie Hubbard LP ’Groovy’ (1961) - a brilliant sextet effort recorded for the long defunct Jazzline label, featuring such stars as Pepper Adams and Duke Pearson. This session was initially intended as trombonist Willie Wilson’s debut as a leader, which explains why he is featured as the only horn on two songs despite being in the company of such superb musicians. However, both the album and Wilson were ill-fated. The album would be issued under the name of the group’s best selling artist Freddie Hubbard, and Wilson would die in 1963, shortly after these recordings were made.

Hubbard, who was 23-years old by the time of this session, went on to work as a sideman on albums by John Coltrane, Paul Chambers, Slide Hampton, Eric Dolphy, Tina Brooks, J.J. Johnson, Hank Mobley, and Quincy Jones, among others.

Personnel : Freddie Hubbard, trumpet; Pepper Adams, baritone sax; Willie Wilson, trombone; Duke Pearson piano; Thomas Howard, bass; Lex Humphries, drums - New York, August 2, 1961. (Discovery Records)

Freddie Hubbard: Here To Stay (CD: Blue Note RVG)Freddie Hubbard: Here To Stay (CD: Blue Note RVG)
This album was recorded in December 1962, mastered, given a catalog number, and a cover that even appeared on inner sleeves of other Blue Note albums. But for reasons unknown, this recording which Hubbard later proclaimed one of his favorites sat in the can for another 13 years! With the exception of Philly Joe Jones, all of the musicians were members of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers at the time and their empathy matches their considerable skills. If there is a highlight here, it’s Hubbard’s challenging “Nostrand and Fulton,” which everyone pulls off with aplomb. (Blue Note Records)

Freddie Hubbard: Hub Tones (CD: Blue Note RVG- US Import)
'Hubbard, at the time of this recording, was just 24 years old and his playing was wonderfully cocky and optimistic. He's in partnership with the excellent but undersung James Spaulding (alto saxophone and flute), and a superb rhythm section of Herbie Hancock, Reggie Workman and Clifford Jarvis...and the playing is full of pith and moment. It's an early 1960s classic.' (The Rough Guide To Jazz)

Freddie Hubbard: MMTC (Monk, Miles, Trane & Cannon) (CD: Nimbus)Freddie Hubbard: MMTC (Monk, Miles, Trane & Cannon) (CD: Nimbus)
Freddie Hubbard is the once, present and future trumpet king - the bright hope of the 60s the reigning brassman of his own generation, and a model for every subsequent horn player who pursues the jazz line sprung by Louis Armstrong. Hubbard’s sound is unmatched for its steely edge, robust centre and plummy depths; bravura spontaneous lyricism, cocky rhythmic confidence, and adventurous harmonic reach are also among his special strengths. On MMTC (Monk, Miles, Trane & Cannon) Hubbard tips the crown he takes pains to wear with deceptive ease in the direction of several past masters whose musics have influenced his own. Hubbard does this in the company of the cream of elite younger straight-ahead players. They and four ace arrangers, too, respond to the implicit challenge posed by Hubbard and his selected repertoire. (Nimbus Records)

Freddie Hubbard & The New Jazz Composers Octet: On The Real Side (CD: Times Square)
On “On The Real Side” the legendary trumpeter Freddie Hubbard’s is backed by The New Jazz Composers Octet, which features David Weiss on trumpet, Myron Walden on alto sax, Steve Davis on trombone, Craig Handy on tenor sax and flute and Russell Malone on guitar. Hubbard revisits some of his own classic compositions, specially re-arranged by trumpeter David Weiss, trombonist Steve Davis and bassist Dwayne Burno. Freddie plays flugelhorn exclusively throughout and while the dazzling speed, stunning high note facility and uncanny endurance may be diminished, the phrasing is still quintessentially Hubbard. (New Note)
