Hank Mobley: Curtain Call (Vinyl LP: Blue Note)Hank Mobley: Curtain Call (Vinyl LP: Blue Note)
It’s a sign of the sheer volume of top-notch hard bop that Blue Note was recording in the 1950s-60s that a supremely swinging date like Hank Mobley’s 1957 album Curtain Call would sit in the vaults unreleased until 1984. Mobley himself was in the middle of a particularly prolific streak that year with the tenor saxophonist recording 6 sessions for Blue Note in 1957 alone. This highly-enjoyable 6-song set includes 4 Mobley originals including the extended opener “Don’t Get To Hip,” the hard-charging title track, and the bright swing of “The Mobe” along with 2 standards (“Deep In A Dream” and “My Reverie”) performed by a quintet with Mobley joined by Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Sonny Clark on piano, Jimmy Rowser on bass, and Art Taylor on drums.

This stereo Tone Poet Vinyl Edition was produced by Joe Harley, mastered by Kevin Gray (Cohearent Audio) from the original analog master tapes, pressed on 180g vinyl at Record Technology Inc. (RTI), and packaged in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket. (Blue Note Records) view larger image

The most focussed and driving album from Blue Note's most favoured tenor man, 'Soul Station' s higher voltage is largely thanks to the presence of a responsive rhythm section that pushed him further than most. The fiery Art Blakey is in volcanic mood, notably on 'Dig Dis' (dig that solo!), which stokes Mobley's fire to the extent of him putting down his best solo on record. The lyrical simplicity of Wynton Kelly's piano adds to the sheer joy of an album which never fails to delight on every playing.

Hank Mobley: Soul Station (Vinyl LP: Blue Note)
Tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley had already led nine dates for Blue Note Records by the time he arrived at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio on February 7, 1960 with pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Art Blakey, but on that day the quartet laid down what would become his masterpiece: Soul Station. The crystalline six-song set was a showcase for Mobley’s lyrical flow from the breezy opening take on Irving Berlin’s “Remember” through bluesy originals like “Dig Dis” and the title track, and the swinging up-tempo numbers “This I Dig of You” and “Split Feelin’s.” Soul Station endures as a jazz classic for the ages.

This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal. (Blue Note Records)

Hank Mobley: No Room For Squares (CD: Blue Note RVG)
Art Blakey-Jazz Messenger-influenced quintets here: tenor-sax Mobley teamed with trumpeters Lee Morgan and Donald Byrd, pianists Andrew Hill and Herbie Hancock, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. The modal music of Miles Davis and John Coltrane is an influence on medium/up-tempo pieces, and Mobley's own flexible rhythm and logical construction are always apparent---though the highlight is Morgan's trumpet rendering of the ballad "Carolyn." 1963 album notes rightly described the style here as "the basic language of contemporary jazz," suggesting a common tongue and working idiom---a claim still good forty years on. "No room for squares," indeed. (Andrew Clark, Editor, Riffs & Choruses: A New Jazz Anthology. Continuum Publishing.)

In addition to boasting one of Reid Miles’ greatest album cover designs, Hank Mobley’s 1963 album No Room for Squares is also a marvel for the music alone. The tenor saxophonist had already notched several hard bop masterpieces in his Blue Note belt including Soul Station and Workout, but No Room for Squares was an even more ambitious effort that found Mobley elevating his game as a bandleader, improviser, and a composer. The album was drawn from two different sessions each featuring a different quintet line-up. A March 7 date found Mobley with trumpeter Donald Byrd, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Butch Warren, and drummer Philly Joe Jones who deliver thrilling performances of the Mobley originals “Up a Step” and “Old World, New Imports.” Mobley returned to Van Gelder Studio on October 2 with Jones once again on drums plus trumpeter Lee Morgan, pianist Andrew Hill, and bassist John Ore to lay down takes of Mobley’s skittering tunes “Three Way Split” and “No Room for Squares” in addition to two remarkable Morgan tunes: the gorgeous ballad “Carolyn” and the grooving “Me ‘N You.”
