Herbie Hancock: Takin' Off (CD: Blue Note RVG)
A conventional bop album on the surface but with some deeper undercurrents. Hancock's debut as leader drew together an impressive and inspired outfit which featured a resurgent Dexter Gordon playing better than ever and trumpeter Freddie Hubbard. Comprising totally of Hancock originals, the gospellish groove of the opening 'Watermelon Man' and the thoughtful 'Alone Am I' are early reminders of his prowess, both as compser and pianist.

On his debut album Takin’ Off—recorded and released in 1962—jazz legend Herbie Hancock arrived fully formed at the helm of an impressive quintet with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon, bassist Butch Warren, and drummer Billy Higgins. Though rooted firmly in hard bop, the brilliant pianist and composer presented his own strikingly original voice on this 6-song album consisting entirely of his own compositions from the funky hit “Watermelon Man” to the timeless ballad “Alone and I.”

This Blue Note 80 Vinyl Edition is all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal. (Blue Note Records)

Herbie Hancock: Maiden Voyage (CD: Blue Note RVG)
Like its other impressionistic Blue Note brother from 1964, 'Empyrean Isles', this jazz seascape is a 'Maiden Voyage' on largely tranquil waters. Dreamy and spacious, Hancock's conception is one of great beauty and refinement, and his playing is some of the most sublimely phrased in all of jazz. Freddie Hubbard too, is in startlingly inventive form and the rest of the band, which belonged to Miles Davis at the time, surpass themselves, notably George Coleman's tenor which is heard at its finest on this record.

Herbie Hancock debuted on Blue Note in 1962 and quickly established himself as both a remarkable pianist and a brilliant composer with three excellent albums—Takin’ Off, My Point Of View, and Inventions & Dimensions—before making what is widely considered to be his first masterpiece: Empyrean Isles. Recorded in 1964, the album seemed to distill the full breadth of Hancock’s artistry into a sweeping 35-minute musical journey. Joining Hancock on the voyage were three of his closest collaborators: trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and Hancock’s Miles Davis Quintet bandmates Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams on drums. Each of the four distinctive original pieces Hancock composed for the date occupies its own unique space. The quartet launches into the album opener “One Finger Snap” which consists of a single opening line that leads directly into blistering improvisations by Hubbard and Hancock. The first side concludes with the beguiling “Oliloquy Valley” which conjures a mysterious and mystical vibe. The flipside leads off with one of Hancock’s most enduring themes, “Cantaloupe Island,” with its undulating groove and unforgettable melody, before moving into a more exploratory realm with “The Egg,” an expansive 14-minute epic that flirts with the avant-garde and gives ample space for the musicians to let their imaginations run wild.

Herbie Hancock: Speak Like A Child (Vinyl LP: Blue Note)
Following the release of his 1965 masterpiece Maiden Voyage, the brilliant pianist Herbie Hancock wouldn’t record his Blue Note follow-up until 1968 with the innovative classic Speak Like A Child. The album was a showcase of several aspects of Hancock’s artistry: as a pianist, a composer, and an arranger. The session found Hancock expanding his tonal palette by adding the unique coloring of flugelhorn (Thad Jones), bass trombone (Peter Phillips), and alto flute (Jerry Dodgion) to his trio with bassist Ron Carter and drummer Mickey Roker. However, the leader’s piano would be spotlighted as the main solo instrument throughout this six-song set including Hancock originals like the alluring title track, the churning “Riot,” the plaintive “Goodbye to Childhood,” and the mysterious closer “The Sorcerer,” a dedication to Miles Davis which had been recorded by the trumpeter’s quintet the year prior. On Carter’s spry and cheerful “First Trip” the trio goes it alone delivering a wonderfully agile and swinging performance for the ages.
