Horace Silver & The Jazz Messengers (Vinyl LP: Dom Disques)Horace Silver & The Jazz Messengers (Vinyl LP: Dom Disques)
Recorded for Blue Note in 1955, this LP became a hard bop primer, with Horace Silver’s compositions tempering bebop with blues and gospel. It was the first album to feature the name “Jazz Messengers”.

180g vinyl audiophile LP.

Price:  £18.99

Horace Silver: Further Explorations (CD: Blue Note RVG)
Further Explorations is the only album by Silver’s quintet to feature Clifford Jordan’s strong sinewy tenor saxophone. This January 1958 session was also Horace’s most ambitious outing to-date as a composer, featuring highly original and unusually structured creations like the 54-bar “The Outlaw” and the haunting 28-bar ballad “Melancholy Mood." Horace Silver: Live At Newport '58 (CD: Blue Note)
In 1958, Silver and his recently assembled new quintet - including the supremely talented but under-recognized trumpeter Louis Smith along with tenor saxophonist Junior Cook, bassist Gene Taylor and drummer Louis Hayes - headlined the Newport Jazz Festival, performing the final set of the Sunday show with extended renditions of “Senor Blues,” as well as “Cool Eyes”, “The Outlaw” and “Tippin’.” Previously unreleased, this historic concert—a rare official document of Silver in a live setting—sees the light of day for the first time on Blue Note Records. Horace Silver Quintet: Doin' The Thing- At The Village Gate (CD: Blue Note RVG)
Horace Silver has had many bands during his career, but none rivaled the Blue Mitchell-Junior Cook edition of the quintet (1958–64). This live date (Silver’s only official live album) was recorded at the Village Gate in New York City in May 1961, and finds the group in peak form, tearing through one great Silver original after another. “Filthy McNasty” was the hit of the album, but every selection, including two bonus tracks not on the original album, is absolutely first-rate and swinging. Horace Silver: The Tokyo Blues (CD: Blue Note RVG)
The music for this album was inspired by a recent Horace Silver tour of Japan (an unusual event in 1962). The band is the classic one with Blue Mitchell and Junior Cook, and the compositions are pure Silver. If the Japanese influence is reflected only in some melodic flavoring and reference to things Japanese in the tune titles, no matter. This is classic Silver at his best with the greatest band he ever led. Remastered by Rudy Van Gelder from the original analog tapes. (Blue Note Records)

Horace Silver introduced his new quintet with Joe Henderson on four tracks in this album. Each became a classic: the title tune, "The Natives Are Restless Tonight," "Que Pasa" and "The Kicker." The CD includes four bonus tracks. (Blue Note Records)

Horace Silver: Silver's Serenade (CD: Blue Note RVG)
This is the last album by the great quintet that featured Blue Mitchell and Junior Cook. As on any Silver album, each tune is a gem. From the strolling, minor-blues title track to the funky "Let’s Get To The Nitty Gritty" to the exotic "Dragon Lady," this is vintage, classic Horace at his best. (Blue Note Records)
