 | J.J. Johnson: Bone-O-Logy (CD: Proper) The first musician to truly make the trombone "speak bebop", J.J. Johnson was one of the most innovative jazz musicians to emerge from the bebop era and is still considered by many to have been the finest trombone player of all time. Starting out with the big bands of Benny Carter, Johnson went on to play with all of the big names of the bop era, recording with Charlie Parker in 1947 and on Miles Davis's "Birth Of The Cool" sessions. He also recorded solo sides from the early '50s onwards, as well as recording more sessions with Miles. All of his early career is represented on this Proper Introduction. (Proper Records)

J.J. Johnson/ Kai Winding/ Benny Green: Trombone By Three (CD: Prestige- US Import) A useful introduction to early modern jazz trombone (1949-51), featuring J.J. Johnson, Kai Winding and Bennie Green, each with their own groups. Distinguished sidemen include saxophonists Sonny Rollins and Gerry Mulligan, trumpeter Kenny Dorham and pianist John Lewis. The trombone bloomed late as a jazz horn; its relative unwieldiness made it difficult to adapt to the complexities of modern jazz playing. But on display here is precise attack and smooth fluency of phrasing---the kind of attributes already found in earlier trombonists (e.g. Jack Teagarden and Trummy Young), and soon to be highlighted in Johnson and Winding's superior "Jay and Kay" 1950s group. | J.J. Johnson: The Eminent, Vol.1 (CD: Blue Note RVG) Fluent, adroit trombone from jazz's leader on the instrument, who early demonstrated it could be an articulate solo vehicle. Johnson's smooth tone and impressive facility are complemented by other soloists in an all-star sextet---Clifford Brown (trumpet), Jimmy Heath (tenorsax), John Lewis (piano), Percy Heath (bass), and Kenny Clarke (drums). This 1953 album represents the best of Johnson's early playing. There are two takes of Gigi Gryce's composition, "Capri", the same of Johnson's riffy "Turnpike," and standards in "It Could Happen to You" and "Get Happy." Finest, perhaps, is Johnson's atmospheric solo version of "Lover Man." Playing of conviction and authority from the instrument's innovator, with fine support. J.J. Johnson: Live In London (CD: Harkit Records) Compiled from two performances at Ronnie Scott's intimate Gerrard Street Club in September 1964, we can hear the late J J at his absolute peak here. Credited as one of the original bebop creators of the 'forties - which he was - J J served apprenticeship with some essentially swing-type big bands before becoming a full-fledged 'modernist'. Some delightful surprises here. Not to be missed! (Harkit Records)

 | Kai Winding Septet: Trombone Panorama (CD: Lone Hill Jazz) Complete "Trombone Panorama" sessions including three tracks never issued before on CD. Kai Winding, one of the instruments most renowned exponents, leads a four trombone front line with Carl Fontana, Wayne Andre & Dick Lieb. A novel concept providing learning as well as entertainment -- the group run through a variety of styles while Winding provides a light-hearted narration as well as a lexicon of hip terms for confused squares.
