Lee Wiley: Night In Manhattan (CD: Jackpot)
Celebrated singer Lee Wiley (1908-1975) was extremely popular from the 1930s to the 1950s, during which time she recorded with some of the most important jazz names from the period. Presented in their entireties on this set are Wiley’s splendid LPs Night in Manhattan (Columbia CL-656) and Sings Vincent Youmans & Irving Berlin (Columbia CL-6215/16).

These two albums comprise the contents of three 10” discs: the original Night in Manhattan, and the Youmans and Berlin song books, which were first issued individually with eight tracks each (on the latter two Wiley is backed by the piano duet of Stan Freeman and Cy Walter). In order to fit all of this material onto two 12” LPs, four tunes from the song books were added to the 12” version of Night in Manhattan (with the remaining 12 tracks from the song books released on the 12” album Sings Vincent Youmans & Irving Berlin). This edition also includes two rare bonus tracks originally issued on the 1956 Columbia LP The Wide, Wide World of Jazz (RCA Victor LPM-1325), which was an anthology featuring various artists. Lee Wiley: S'Wonderful (CD: Proper, 2 CDs)
As the 1930s evolved in music, female singers emerged who had learned the lessons of the rhythmic advances made by Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong during the '20s. One of these singers, and one who would achieve considerable fame with the Big Bands, was Lee Wiley. Working initially with the Paul Whiteman orchestra, Wiley later had her own solo radio show before becoming part of the scene around bandleader Eddie Condon, and it was with the musicians around him (as well as other star swing era soloists) that Wiley made some of her most memorable recordings. After the war, Wiley recorded two albums for Columbia with the producer Mitch Miller. This Proper Pair presents a portrait of the evolution of this great singer, whose fragile style still possessed enough rhythmic swing to cut through even the playing of the all star bands she recorded with.
