Blowing an alto inspired by Bird, Donaldson made racks of Blue Notes, initially of a hardbop nature with Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers but later cultivating an R&B style more common on the tenor horn. Driven along by Ray Barretto's conga, this soulful excursion remains Donaldson's most defining moment on record, most notably for the minor blues of title track and an unusually joyful 'The Masquerade Is Over'. Great fun!

A fine, relaxed set from the alto man, very almost the equal of the classic 'Blues Walk' set, with an infectiously sunny reading of 'South Of The Border', which proves that the Donaldson alto could still play straight-ahead bop in addition to the soul-jazz and blues he so regularly produced. His 'Polka Dots And Moonbeams' is beautifully managed and though the two added alternate takes don't add much to what we had already, this is as good an example of Donaldson's art.

Lou Donaldson: Lush Life (CD: Blue Note RVG)
On this gorgeous album, one of Donaldson’s favorites, his alto soars over an all-star octet arranged by Duke Pearson on seven standards. Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard and McCoy Tyner also contribute solos. This album was readied for release in 1967 when it was recorded, but subsequently shelved when Donaldson’s “Alligator Bogaloo” album became a big hit. It was first issued in 1980. (Blue Note Records)
