Oliver Nelson: Meet Oliver Nelson + Main Stem (CD: Fresh Sound)Oliver Nelson: Meet Oliver Nelson + Main Stem (CD: Fresh Sound)
Meet Oliver Nelson was the saxophonist's 1959 recording debut as leader, on which he shared horn duties with trumpeter Kenny Dorham. Two years later came Mainstem, a typical prestige blowing session of the time, full of wit and invention, played by a sextet with Joe Newman on trumpet and Oliver Nelson playing both alto and tenor. (Discovery Records)

Oliver Nelson Quintet: Takin' Care Of Business + Lem's Beat (CD: Fresh Sound)
Oliver Nelson's later fame as a composer/arranger overshadowed his instrumental skills but he was a formidable performer on both alto and tenor sax. On the first album included here he fronts a quintet which includes vibraphonist Lem Winchester and Johnny Smith on organ. The second session (recorded a month later, in April 1960) was issued under Lem Winchester's name and features Nelson on tenor alongside Curtis Peagler, alto. (Discovery Records)

Oliver Nelson & Eric Dolphy: Complete Recordings (CD: Essential Jazz Classics, 2 CDs)

Oliver Nelson: Screamin' The Blues (CD: New Jazz RVG)Oliver Nelson: Screamin' The Blues (CD: New Jazz RVG)
Nelson, who had made his big-time debut on Prestige via the tenor saxophone, plays both tenor and alto here, combining and contrasting with Eric Dolphy on "Alto-itis." The powerful trumpet of Richard Williams completes the front line for a high-energy session that evokes an earlier, jazz-oriented R&B, particularly on the title track, and a modern gospel groove on "The Meetin'."

Nelson went on to make his mark as a composer/arranger before his untimely death in 1975, but this date represents him as a blowing musician in the first phase of his recording career. Although this is a small band, Nelson constantly brings the lessons he learned during his band apprenticeship into play, combining them with the freedom of improvisation afforded by the combo context (Fantasy, Inc.).

'One of the classics of the period, and if there was one Nelson track to take away to a desert island it would have to be the one that starts the album, the lovely 'Stolen Moments' with its mournful Hubbard solo and a lovely statement from Dolphy on flute.' (The Penguin Guide To Jazz)
