Phil Woods Quintet & Quartet: New Jazz Quintet - Encores + Woodlore (CD: Fresh Sound)Phil Woods Quintet & Quartet: New Jazz Quintet - Encores + Woodlore (CD: Fresh Sound)
Phil Woods’ first two records as leader in 1954-55 were 10 inch albums full of youthful zest with stimulating originals garnished by the warm and sensitive soloing of Woods and Eardley in particular.• “Woodlore,” the third album here, was Woods’ first 12-inch LP of his own, and the first set on which he was the only horn. His swinging alto is moving and emotional, with an almost ferocious individuality of conception. (Discovery Records)

Phil Woods & Gene Quill: Altology- Complete Quintet & Sextet Sessions 1956-1957 (CD: Fresh Sound, 2 CDs)Phil Woods & Gene Quill: Altology- Complete Quintet & Sextet Sessions 1956-1957 (CD: Fresh Sound, 2 CDs)
An immaculate 2CD set of quintet & sextet material led by the alto saxists Phil Woods and Gene Quill - recorded in New York in 1956/57. With them are a fine list of musicians : Sol Schlinger (bar.sax), Dave McKenna, George Syran, Bob Corwin (p), Buddy Jones, Teddy Kotick, Sonny Dallas (b), & Shadow Wilson, Nick Stabulas (d).

In the mid-50s Phil Woods and Gene Quill had been playing together under the euphonious designation of “Phil & Quill.” Although pairings of this kind became commonplace on LPs in those years, in their case the outstanding quality of the solos and the attractive writing always kept things cooking. While both altoists had assimilated Bird’s message and shared stylistic origins, the kicks came in their approaches as soloists, with Woods tossing off long and nimble passages, while Quill rapped out bursts of melody, building climactic patterns out of these biting fragments and explosive phrases. The contrast worked, time and time again. (Discovery Records)
