 | Roland Kirk: Kirk's Work (CD: Prestige RVG) Roland Kirk, the amazing one-man saxophone section and sublime soloist, had yet to add "Rahsaan" to his name when he recorded his first album for Prestige in 1961. It wasn't yet quite clear to many, even people at the center of the jazz community, that Kirk's gifts went considerably beyond the ability to play three horns at once. Gradually, it began to dawn on one and all that the man's almost superhuman energy and dedication were matched by musicianship based as firmly in tradition as in innovation. Eventually, it became possible to accept as parts of Kirk's kaleidoscopic expression those odd instruments the manzello and the strich, not to mention the nose flute and kirkbam that he added later. And what a tenor saxophonist. Kirk's Work is a milestone in the brief, brilliant career of a major artist. (Fantasy, Inc)

 | Roland Kirk: We Free Kings (CD: EmArcy- US Import) A must-have in any collection of the great multi-horn blower, this is as fine an example of Kirk's talents. 'Three For The Festival' would become an essential part of his repertoire over the next decade or so, and the christmas carol re-working of the title cut still sounds as freshly imaginitive today as it did 30 years ago.

 | Roland Kirk: Rip, Rig & Panic/ Now Please Don't You Cry, Beautiful Edith (CD: EmArcy) 'Panic' is a Kirk classic, a vigorous workout with a fantastic band featuring pianist Jaki Byard and drummer Elvin Jones and containing two splendid homages, 'From Bechet, Byas and Fats' and 'No Tonic Pres'. 'Edith' remains one of his least-known albums, the only one he did for Verve, but the title cut and his 'Alfie' are quite magnificent examples of how Kirk could multiplex his distinctive jocularities with moments of much tenderness.

 | Roland Kirk & Al Hibbler: A Meeting Of The Times (CD: Atlantic) Kirks tribute to Ellington, A Meeting Of The Times teams the multi-reedist with Al Hibbler, a former member of Ellingtons band and one of the most under-rated singers of the 1940s. A beautiful and sadly neglected classic available for the first time on CD. (Warner Jazz)
