'Panic' is a Kirk classic, a vigorous workout with a fantastic band featuring pianist Jaki Byard and drummer Elvin Jones and containing two splendid homages, 'From Bechet, Byas and Fats' and 'No Tonic Pres'. 'Edith' remains one of his least-known albums, the only one he did for Verve, but the title cut and his 'Alfie' are quite magnificent examples of how Kirk could multiplex his distinctive jocularities with moments of much tenderness.
