Stan Kenton: Contemporary Concepts (CD: Capitol)Stan Kenton: Contemporary Concepts (CD: Capitol)
In 1955 with Mel Lewis on drums and Bill Holman as chief arranger, the Stan Kenton Orchestra swung harder that it ever had or would again. TO celebrate the high caliber of jazz in the band, Kenton booked a Chicago studio in July to document Holman's charts and the great solo work of Charlie Mariano, Bill Perkins, Sam Noto and Carl Fontana.

The aptly named Contemporary Concept, which also included Gerry Mulligan's Limelight is the result. Added to the original album are two more tracks from the session, Stan Kenton's Sunset Tower and Gene Roland's Opus In Chartreuse as well as two more Roland opuses. This milestone in Kenton's recording career is on CD for the first time. (Blue Note Records)

Stan Kenton: Back To Balboa (CD: Capitol)
In 1957, Stan Kenton brought his orchestra back to the Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa Beach, California, the site of the band's first success 17 years earlier. Capitol set up recording equipment there and recorded this album without an audience over two afternoons.

The majority of the arrangements are by the incredible Johnny Richards although Marty Paich contributed two and Bill Holman one. Soloists include Sam Noto, Lennie Niehaus, Bill Perkins and Richie Kamuca.

Added to the original album, which appears on CD for the first time, are four tracks from Rendezvous With Kenton, recorded at the ballroom three months earlier. The original mono tapes were mastered in 24 bit. (Blue Note Records)
