 | Stanley Turrentine: Look Out! (CD: Blue Note RVG) Stanley Turrentines heartfelt, soulful sound is instantly recognizable. His Blue Note debut from June 1960 finds him with the Horace Parlan trio of the time with George Tucker and Al Harewood, which was one of the busiest rhythm sections on the New York club and recording scene at the time. Few of Turrentines contemporaries were as adept at blending a taste for offbeat material with a knack for enlivening melodies and sustaining grooves that satisfied a mass audience. The material on this album, which includes three bonus tracks from the session, ranges from standards to jazz tunes by Clifford Brown and Chano Pozo to soulful originals like Minor Chant and Little Sheri. | Stanley Turrentine: Hustlin' (CD: Blue Note RVG) This neglected Stanley Turrentine gem has a groove that won't quit. Bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Otis Finch create a comfortable pocket at any tempo, and Turrentine, organist Shirley Scott and Kenny Burrell on guitar lay in the groove beautifully on all six tunes. Stanley Turrentine (with The 3 Sounds): The Complete Blue Hour Sessions (CD: Blue Note Connoisseur, 2 CDs) With the excellent "Three Sounds" of Gene Harris (piano), Andrew Simpkins (bass) and Bill Dowdy (drums), Turrentine blows soulful, moody, warm-breathed tenor sax on early morning "blue hour" ballads. This is gushy but also gutsy stuff, a broad, luxurious sound on "I Want a Little Girl," "Gee Baby Ain't I Good to You," "Since I Fell for You" and "Willow Weep for Me." Groove-time. Guaranteed to make you feel good when you find that pillow's empty, "where your baby used to be." A personal favourite, this. (Andrew Clark, Editor, Riffs & Choruses: A New Jazz Anthology. | Stanley Turrentine: The Spoiler (CD: Blue Note RVG) Duke Pearson arranged this rich, swinging 1966 all-star nonet date, a worthy successor to Turrentines Rough N Tumble. Stanleys tenor sax is the primarily soloist and he burns through Pearsons The Magilla and Armando Bozos La Fiesta with ease and soulfulness. Added to the original album is a version of Max Roachs Lonesome Lover from the session. (Blue Note Records)

Stanley Turrentine: A Bluish Bag (CD: Blue Note Connoisseur) Tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine's tenure with Blue Note produced an eye-popping variety of sessions, from big band to organ trio and mined a wide variety of musical styles. His work with pianist/arranger Duke Pearson was particularly fertile ground for both artists. Featuring two different 10-piece bands, the first seven tracks were released on two long-out-of-print LPs in the late-'70s, and the last five tracks are gems from the second session issued here for the first time.
