Steve Lacy: Reflections (CD: New Jazz- US Import)
Steve Lacy was drawn to the soprano sax by the presence of Sidney Bechet. He studied music with devotion in and out of school, evolving through several styles. When he came upon the compositions of Thelonious Monk, they connected with him in a deep and profound manner and he set out to learn as much of the repertory as he could.

Where most musicians who played Monk’s music limited themselves to “’Round Midnight” and “Straight, No Chaser,” Lacy mined more esoteric fare such as “Work” and “Skippy” and came up with some hard, brilliant gems.

At one time, in his pre-free music stage, he led a band that played nothing but Monk. This album, with empathic support from Mal Waldron, Buell Neidlinger, and Elvin Jones, is a total reflection of that attitude. (Fantasy, Inc.)

It presents him in a pianoless quartet with Don Cherry on trumpet, Carl Brown on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. The repertoire consists of four pieces by Thelonious Monk, and two by Duke Ellington (”Something to Live For” in collaboration with Billy Strayhorn). As a bonus, the label has added Lacy’s complete first LP as a leader, Soprano Sax (Prestige PRLP7125), which also includes compositions by both Monk and Ellington. (Harmonia Mundi)

Steve Lacy: Avignon And After, Vol.1 (CD: Emanem)Steve Lacy: Avignon And After, Vol.1 (CD: Emanem)
Highlights from Lacy's first solo concerts in Avignon 1972 featuring pieces like 'The New Duck', 'The Breath', 'Name' and 'Cloudy' that became frequently played, alongside rarities like 'Stations', 'Josephine', 'Weal' and 'The Wool'. In addition to this material that was originally issued as Emanem LP 301 and reissued on CD 4004, this new compilation also contains four more short rarities from the same concerts: 'Bound', 'The Rush', 'Holding' and 'The Dumps'.

Finally there is his performance of his somewhat outrageous 'Clangs' cycle from Berlin in 1974 - the first time a solo version of this has been issued. Previous issues of this suite were by a duo in 1976 and a double sextet in 1992. This solo performance is arguably the definitive version. Like the Avignon music, this finds Lacy's unaccompanied work at its most adventurous. (Harmonia Mundi)

Steve Lacy: Shots (CD: hatOLOGY)
This album is release of the original LP on the Musica label, recorded in Paris in October 1977. Not to be confused with the recent Emanem issue of Shots (as part of the Cycles album), which is a live version from Rome, November 1977.

..Steve Lacy and Masa Kwate do something quite different on their wonderful and unique LP Shots. Neither is there any kind of conventionally direct interaction, where one player plays something and the other supports or counters, nor is there a sensibility of total independence. The American soprano saxophonist and the Japanese percussionist have a special understanding, no doubt a kind of cultural negotiation, that gives their joint activities a simultaneous atmosphere of interaction and independence. I can’t say that I’ve heard anything else like it... (John Corbett - from the sleeve notes) (Harmonia Mundi)

Steve Lacy: Duets- Associates (CD: Felmay)
Recorded between 1982 and 1994, ‘Duets: Associates’ features saxophonist Steve Lacy in a variety of duo contexts with the likes of trombonists Roswell Rudd and George Lewis, guitarist Derek Bailey, pianist Mal Waldron and saxophonist Steve Potts. They perform a mix of Lacy originals together with two Thelonious Monk compositions, “Epistrophy” and “Pannonica”. The variety of repertoire and musicians makes this CD a unique document of one of the subtlest arts of this great saxophone player: the duet. (Proper Note)

Steve Lacy Quintet: Last Tour (CD: Emanem)
After a long tour of North America starting in summer 2003, this quintet concluded, in March 2004, by playing two concerts in Boston - most of the first one being included here. The material is five of the Beat poems featuring Irene Aebi, plus three instrumentals. After a lot of working together, this group was really both loose and together with everybody playing magnificently. Even Lacy plays superbly, so there is no need to make any allowances for his ill health. In fact, the evening sounds like a very enjoyable occasion, making this CD one of the best of the quintet's latter recordings - an appropriate farewell to a major musician. (Harmonia Mundi)
