Teddy Wilson: The Collection 1933-41 (CD: Acrobat, 2 CDs)Teddy Wilson: The Collection 1933-41 (CD: Acrobat, 2 CDs)
With a sophisticated and elegant style, Teddy Wilson has been described as the definitive swing pianist, an accolade which meant that he was ubiquitous on the recording and recording scene through the ‘30s and ‘40s, and his skill as an understated but stylish accompanist in small groups with singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday was a notable feature of his work, and was house arranger hired for Brunswick in the mid-30s.This collection cherry-picks from his large body of work from the dawn of the swing era through to the post-war years, featuring recordings with his own band, including tracks with the great vocalists mentioned above, along with his work with Benny Goodman and others. Inevitably, it also features many illustrious contemporaries in the line-ups, and is an excellent showcase for his distinctive easy style. (Acrobat Music)

Teddy Wilson Trio With Jo Jones: Complete Studio Recordings (CD: American Jazz Classics, 3 CDs)Teddy Wilson Trio With Jo Jones: Complete Studio Recordings (CD: American Jazz Classics, 3 CDs)
Although they had worked and recorded together since the mid-thirties, pianist Teddy Wilson and drummer Jo Jones only recorded in the trio format during the mid-1950s. All their studio trio sessions are contained here. Their studio trio collaborations were recorded in New York during three extended sessions on January 1, 1955, March 5, 1956, and September 13, 1956. Milt Hinton, Gene Ramey, and Al Lucas alternated on bass. The September 20, 1954 studio session added here as a bonus at the end of CD3 is a strange experiment. Instead of the usual piano/bass/drums format, it includes Benny Carter's alto sax in place of the bass, creating an authentic three-star line-up with each musician enjoying an equal share of solo space. All original sessions are produced by Norman Granz. 3CD set, digitally remastered, deluxe digipak with a 20-page booklet. (Proper Music)
