Andrew Cyrille: Duology (CD: Jazzwerkstatt)Andrew Cyrille: Duology (CD: Jazzwerkstatt)
Michael Marcus and Ted Daniel have been playing and recording together for more than 20 years in a variety of group settings, including as a duo pairing by the name of Duology. Both are mainstays of the NYC jazz avant garde scene with impressive discographies alongside many of the greartest names in the field (Daniel - with Sonny Sharrock, Archie Shepp, Dewey Redman, Sam Rivers, Billy Bang and Henry Threadgill etc; Marcus - with Cosmosomatics co-led by Sonny Simmons, Jaki Byard, Jemeel Moondoc, Frank Lowe etc).

On this new studio recording the duo expand into a trio with the addition of a venerable master musician from a generation earlier, the great drummer Andrew Cyrille. (Harmonia Mundi)

Price:  £13.99

Andrew Cyrille Quartet: The Declaration of Musical Independence (CD: ECM)
The great avant-jazz drummer Andrew Cyrille - whose associations have ranged from a long, vintage collaboration with Cecil Taylor to co-leading current all-star collective Trio 3 with Oliver Lake and Reggie Workman - makes his ECM leader debut with The Declaration of Musical Independence.

Featuring a quartet with guitar luminary Bill Frisell, keyboardist Richard Teitelbaum and bassist Ben Street, the album kicks off with an artfully oblique interpretation of John Coltrane's "Coltrane Time," led by Cyrille's solo drum intro. The disc then features a sequence of sonically arresting originals, including Street's luminous "Say..." and Frisell's deeply felt "Kaddish" and "Song for Andrew," with Frisell's guitar alternately cutting and billowing, the edge evoking some of his most illustrious past ECM performances. (Proper Music)

Don Pullen: Solo Piano Record (CD: Sackville)Don Pullen: Solo Piano Record (CD: Sackville)
Between 1974 and 1980, Bill Smith was actively presenting Toronto concerts by a newly emerging jazz avant-garde and recording their work for the Sackville label. Many of the recordings are intimate solo and duet performances which are now released for the first time on CD.

Don Pullen was a free-form pianist often compared with Cecil Taylor but he insisted that he had developed his style completely independently of any Taylor influences. This was the first record issued under his own name, having established his reputation as a member of the Charles Mingus group with which he had recorded 3 LPs. (Discovery Records)

Price:  £12.99

Don Pullen: Plays Monk (CD: Candid)
This wonderful, irreverent, far out album celebrates the music of Thelonious Monk together with two Pullen originals in the Monk vein. Pianist Don Pullen first got noticed in the mid-sixties when he made the acquaintance of Muhal Richard Abrams and other musicians involved in the avant garde scene. Word about his talents got around and in 1973 Charles Mingus invited him to join the band. Pullen stayed with Mingus for several years then he and saxophonist George Adams formed a new band which lasted from 1979 to 1988, cementing Don's ever increasing reputation around the world. His style was described as "Zipping and unzipping the piano". Not an exaggeration on this brilliant solo recital! (Proper Music)

Tenor saxophonist Odean Pope is a product of the dynamic Philadelphia jazz scene of the 1950’s and shared the stage with John Coltrane, Lee Morgan and Jimmy Smith. His new CD has a fantastic line-up including saxophonist James Carter and drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts. Odean Pope also impresses as composer and arranger on this album as eight of the pieces are his own. This includes “To The Roach”, dedicated to his former leader Max Roach, and whose band he was a key part of in the 1960’s and 70’s. (Proper Music)

Ellery Eskelin Trio Willisau: Live (CD: hatOLOGY)
New York free improv saxophonist Ellery Eskelin is no stranger to the Hatology label, which has been documenting his outpourings for many a year. This live recording follows on from the Trio New York albums, but with Gerry Hemingway replacing Gerald Cleaver on drums. When one third of a trio is changed, the entire group sound can change with it, hence the new trio is now identifiable as the Trio Willisau, the recording having taken place at the Swiss festival at Willisau last year. An exemplary album of spontaneously interactive music-making, inspired by the great jazz tradition. 'Gary s nearly telepathic musical mind along with Gerry Hemingway s absolutely unique approach to the drums infused the music this evening with a very special and rare chemistry. It was a great pleasure for me and I hope you enjoy listening.' - Ellery Eskelin, November 2015. (Harmonia Mundi)

Circle: Paris Concert (ECM: Vinyl LP, 2 LPs)
Part of ECM's vinyl re-issue programme on 180g vinyl of notable albums, Circle's Paris Concert 2-LP set is made available with a free download.

Circle was a band on fire with creativity. Chick Corea and Dave Holland had just left Miles Davis's band, keen to explore all parameters of new music in an improvised context. Anthony Braxton, equally inspired by Stockhausen and Coltrane, brought in new directions from the AACM. Barry Altschul's resumé included extensive work with Paul Bley. Together they were, for a while, matchless. Corea called the Paris Concert (recorded 1971) the realization of a dream. Melody Maker: "Paris Concert is evidence that here was one of the most excitingly talented bands of recent years, for these 94 minutes of music simply burst with vigorous invention." (Proper Music)

'Live in Sant'Anna Arresi, 2004' is the 2nd volume in AUM Fidelity's David S. Ware Archive Series, and the first release of the saxophone master in rare duo performance with fellow master of music, pianist Matthew Shipp.

Though sharing seventeen years together in the legendary David S. Ware Quartet, Shipp recalls that he and Ware performed duo concerts perhaps six times at most in that period. Thankfully, on this latter-day occasion, their work together in this form was professionally recorded. (Proper Music)

Joe Morris, William Parker & Gerald Cleaver: Altitude (CD: AUM Fidelity)
Joe Morris, William Parker and Gerald Cleaver are among the most gifted instrumentalists & improvisers in the world today – natural and consistent innovators all, always sharing, always igniting new ideas, always seeking something beyond description. They have performed & recorded together in different configurations on numerous occasions over the last 15 years. Altitude documents their first communion together as a trio & they gripped it by creating timeless music rife with invention fully in the moment.

John Zorn asked AUM Fidelity's Steven Joerg to curate his NYC performance space The Stone for two weeks in June 2011; those two weeks served in effect as an early celebration of AUM Fidelity’s 15th anniversary, and resulted in profiles of Joerg and the label in the Village Voice and Wall Street Journal. Booking this trio as part of the series was a very first thought. Altitude presents the entire first set of the night (with Parker on bass), along with two excerpts from their second set (with Parker on the three-string Moroccan lute known as a sintir or guimbri). The long form of music creation / total immersion in invention transpired. (Harmonia Mundi)
