Marion Brown Quartet: Mary Ann (CD: Moosicus, 2 CDs)Marion Brown Quartet: Mary Ann (CD: Moosicus, 2 CDs)
Historic live recording of Marion Brown from the Club Lila Eule, Bremen (Germany) from April 24, 1969, lovingly mastered by Johannes Scheibenreif, feat Ed Kroeger (trombone), Sigi Busch (bass) and Steve McCall (drums).

The alto saxophonist Marion Brown (1931), who grew up in Atlanta, moved to New York in 1965, and almost immediately, while still an unknown, played on John Coltrane's seminal album "Ascension" and Archie Shepp's "Fire Music," quickly became one of the most radical yet romantic of free improvisers. Andrew Cyrille: Duology (CD: Jazzwerkstatt)Andrew Cyrille: Duology (CD: Jazzwerkstatt)
Michael Marcus and Ted Daniel have been playing and recording together for more than 20 years in a variety of group settings, including as a duo pairing by the name of Duology. Both are mainstays of the NYC jazz avant garde scene with impressive discographies alongside many of the greartest names in the field (Daniel - with Sonny Sharrock, Archie Shepp, Dewey Redman, Sam Rivers, Billy Bang and Henry Threadgill etc; Marcus - with Cosmosomatics co-led by Sonny Simmons, Jaki Byard, Jemeel Moondoc, Frank Lowe etc).

On this new studio recording the duo expand into a trio with the addition of a venerable master musician from a generation earlier, the great drummer Andrew Cyrille. (Harmonia Mundi)

Andrew Cyrille Quartet: The Declaration of Musical Independence (CD: ECM)
The great avant-jazz drummer Andrew Cyrille - whose associations have ranged from a long, vintage collaboration with Cecil Taylor to co-leading current all-star collective Trio 3 with Oliver Lake and Reggie Workman - makes his ECM leader debut with The Declaration of Musical Independence.

Featuring a quartet with guitar luminary Bill Frisell, keyboardist Richard Teitelbaum and bassist Ben Street, the album kicks off with an artfully oblique interpretation of John Coltrane's "Coltrane Time," led by Cyrille's solo drum intro. The disc then features a sequence of sonically arresting originals, including Street's luminous "Say..." and Frisell's deeply felt "Kaddish" and "Song for Andrew," with Frisell's guitar alternately cutting and billowing, the edge evoking some of his most illustrious past ECM performances. Andrew Cyrille: Lebroba (CD: ECM)Andrew Cyrille: Lebroba (CD: ECM)
Andrew Cyrille’s title Lebroba is a contraction of Leland, Brooklyn and Baltimore, birthplaces of the protagonists of an album bringing together three of creative music’s independent thinkers. Each of them made his first ECM appearance long ago: drummer Andrew Cyrille on Marion Brown’s Afternoon of a Georgia Faun (1970), trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith on his own classic Divine Love (1978), and guitarist Bill Frisell on Eberhard Weber’s Fluid Rustle (1979); these are, of course, players of enduring influence. Frisell contributed to Cyrille’s previous ECM disc The Declaration of Musical Independence, but Lebroba marks a first-time meeting for the guitarist and Wadada Leo Smith. A generous leader, Cyrille gives plenty of room to his cohorts, and all three musicians bring in compositions, with “Turiya”, Wadada’s elegant dedication to Alice Coltrane, unfurling slowly over its 17-minute duration. In his own pieces, including the title track and the closing “Pretty Beauty”, Cyrille rarely puts the focus on the drums, preferring to play melodically and interactively, sensitive to pitch and to space. There are references to West African music and the blues as well as the history of jazz drumming, but Cyrille’s priority today is an elliptical style in which meter is implied rather than stated. Andrew Cyrille Quartet: The News (CD: ECM)
The new album from the quartet led by one of jazz’s innovators, drummer Andrew Cyrille, carries the story forward from the 2016 release The Declaration of Musical Independence, a recording which Down Beat hailed as “an unabashed exploration into time, pulse space and atmosphere…ambitious yet simple, rich yet stripped-down, challenging yet infinitely satisfying.” Bill Frisell and Ben Street remain from the Declaration line-up with David Virelles taking the piano role. Each of the players has space for improvisational expression – and Frisell and Virelles also contribute material - but it is Cyrille’s communicative sensibility and what the New York Times called his “watchful, flowing pulse” that guides the band. Don Pullen: Solo Piano Record (CD: Sackville)Don Pullen: Solo Piano Record (CD: Sackville)
Between 1974 and 1980, Bill Smith was actively presenting Toronto concerts by a newly emerging jazz avant-garde and recording their work for the Sackville label. Many of the recordings are intimate solo and duet performances which are now released for the first time on CD.

Don Pullen was a free-form pianist often compared with Cecil Taylor but he insisted that he had developed his style completely independently of any Taylor influences. This was the first record issued under his own name, having established his reputation as a member of the Charles Mingus group with which he had recorded 3 LPs. (Discovery Records)

Tenor saxophonist Odean Pope is a product of the dynamic Philadelphia jazz scene of the 1950’s and shared the stage with John Coltrane, Lee Morgan and Jimmy Smith. His new CD has a fantastic line-up including saxophonist James Carter and drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts. Odean Pope also impresses as composer and arranger on this album as eight of the pieces are his own. This includes “To The Roach”, dedicated to his former leader Max Roach, and whose band he was a key part of in the 1960’s and 70’s. (Proper Music)

Bennie Maupin: The Jewel In The Lotus (CD: ECM Touchstones)
Bennie Maupin has been an inventive contributor to iconic records including Miles Davis’s Bitches Brew, Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi and Headhunters and Marion Brown’s Afternoon Of A Georgia Faun. His recordings under his own name have been infrequent but his leader debut, is indeed a jewel. “A more selfless album is hard to imagine”, said Down Beat in 1975. “On The Jewel In The Lotus, the sound is supreme, and all the players strive to achieve a thorough blending”. Recorded in New York in 1974, the disc’s personnel is drawn from the circle around Herbie Hancock in the period, but the music has a character all its own. (ECM Records)

The latest from Pulitzer Prize-winner Henry Threadgill, The Other One, is comprised of a three-movement composition entitled "Of Valence" that was the musical component of a large multimedia work performed and recorded live at Roulette Intermedium in Brooklyn, New York in May, 2022.

Written for a 12-piece ensemble - made up of an unusual instrumental combination of three saxophones, violin, viola, two cellos, tuba, percussion, piano and two bassoons - The New York Times described the performance as possessing "a galvanic sense of swing," and "in lock-step with his every surprise rhythmic feint - producing an obliquely danceable, straightforwardly joyous Threadgillian energy." Circle: Paris Concert (ECM: Vinyl LP, 2 LPs)
Part of ECM's vinyl re-issue programme on 180g vinyl of notable albums, Circle's Paris Concert 2-LP set is made available with a free download.

Circle was a band on fire with creativity. Chick Corea and Dave Holland had just left Miles Davis's band, keen to explore all parameters of new music in an improvised context. Anthony Braxton, equally inspired by Stockhausen and Coltrane, brought in new directions from the AACM. Barry Altschul's resumé included extensive work with Paul Bley. Together they were, for a while, matchless. Corea called the Paris Concert (recorded 1971) the realization of a dream. Melody Maker: "Paris Concert is evidence that here was one of the most excitingly talented bands of recent years, for these 94 minutes of music simply burst with vigorous invention." Leo Smith: Divine Love (CD: ECM Touchstones)Leo Smith: Divine Love (CD: ECM Touchstones)
Recently described by Vijay Iyer as “one of the greatest recorded works of all time”, Wadada Leo Smith’s Divine Love counts as a classic by any definition. “His sound has strong resemblances to that of Miles Davis,” wrote John Fordham in a five-star Guardian review, “but Smith has absorbed the approaches of all the bebop trumpet heroes and redeployed them within a bold, vital and often ritualistic setting.” The composition “Tastalun” features three outstanding trumpet players, as Lester Bowie and Kenny Wheeler join Smith, and Charlie Haden plays soulfully on “Spirituals: The Language of Love.” Recorded 1978. Joe Morris, William Parker & Gerald Cleaver: Altitude (CD: AUM Fidelity)
Joe Morris, William Parker and Gerald Cleaver are among the most gifted instrumentalists & improvisers in the world today – natural and consistent innovators all, always sharing, always igniting new ideas, always seeking something beyond description. They have performed & recorded together in different configurations on numerous occasions over the last 15 years. Altitude documents their first communion together as a trio & they gripped it by creating timeless music rife with invention fully in the moment.

John Zorn asked AUM Fidelity's Steven Joerg to curate his NYC performance space The Stone for two weeks in June 2011; those two weeks served in effect as an early celebration of AUM Fidelity’s 15th anniversary, and resulted in profiles of Joerg and the label in the Village Voice and Wall Street Journal. Booking this trio as part of the series was a very first thought. Altitude presents the entire first set of the night (with Parker on bass), along with two excerpts from their second set (with Parker on the three-string Moroccan lute known as a sintir or guimbri). The long form of music creation / total immersion in invention transpired. (Harmonia Mundi)
