Walt Dickerson: Tell Us Only The Beautiful Things (CD: Candid) Material from the Why Not Series Until now unheard for nearly two decades showcasing cutting edge jazz from the 1970S. Walt Dickerson (1931 2008) was a true original with a unique sound and distinctive approach to thevibraphone. Bursting onto the embryonic free jazz scene he made a real impact being voted New Star of 1962 in the prestigious Down Beat critics poll. Recorded in 1975 in Philadelphia - Walts distinctive melodic and rhythmic approach was complemented by his unique timbre created though the use of specially treated rubber mallets to produce a plush, warm and yet crisp sound. Featuring Chicago bassist Wilbur Ware and fellow Philadelphian Andrew Cyrille, creating a trio par excellence. Originally released on the Why Not label this album fell into obscurity until Candid Records Alan Bates acquired the label in the late 1990s. In 2009 Candid bring these fantastic recordings back from the brink. (Proper Music)

 | George Russell: Ezz-thetics (CD: Riverside Keepnews Collection) George Russell is listed in the Encyclopedia of Jazz as "composer, piano, educator" and all of these are accurate descriptions of this dynamic musical revolutionary. But in the early Sixties he also spent some exciting years as a bandleader, presenting his Lydian and pan-tonal concepts in action and helping vitally in the rise to prominence of two significant innovators of the period: Eric Dolphy and Don Ellis. Both men play major roles in this 1961 album by probably the best of Russell's small groups, which includes one of Dolphy's most lasting celebrated recorded efforts--his astonishing bass clarinet solo on the Thelonious Monk classic, "'Round Midnight." Ron Carter: Third Plane (CD: Milestone- US Import) The trio of pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Tony Williams is jazz history, from their five years together as Miles Davis's rhythm section in 1963-68 to their frequent collaborations together in the recording studio. Carter assembled the three during his days as a Milestone recording artist, at a time when occasional work together in the V.S.O.P. Quintet had sharpened their interactive brilliance. The program chosen includes three of the bassist's own originals and Williams's snappish "Lawra," in addition to the recasting of Miles Davis favorite "Stella by Starlight" as a waltz and Hancock's evocative "Dolphin Dance," all played with a unity of purpose that does indeed elevate the music to another place. Ken McIntyre with Eric Dolphy: Looking Ahead (CD: New Jazz/ Fantasy) The largely overlooked figure of McIntyre enjoyed his finest hour in the company of Eric Dolphy on this ebulliently sunny set. Few records of 'new jazz' exude such good fun. A strong rhythm section grounded in bebop of Walter Bishop Jr, Sam Jones and Art Taylor drive the conversational altos and flutes of two jazzmen clearly enjoying June 1960. 'Head Shakin' is a notably engaging cut featuring a wonderfully inquiring but swinging Dolphy solo which looks ahead whilst harking back to the blues from earlier decades . Though never as distinctively rarified a voice, the leader contributes his own speech-like statements with much character and beauty. Progressive jazz at its most exuberant.

 | Grachan Moncur III: Evolution (CD: Blue Note RVG) Jackie McLeans cutting-edge 1963 quintet catapulted Grachan Moncur III, Bobby Hutcherson, and Tony Williams on to the national jazz scene. That November, Moncur, the prime composer in the group, was given his own date as a leader, debuting four magnificent original compositions and expanding the group to a sextet with the valuable inclusion of Lee Morgan. Grachan Moncur III: Some Other Stuff (CD: Blue Note RVG) Blue Note's version of experimental jazz in the '60s was rooted in tradition and played with uncanny empathy and a looseness that belied the precision and intricacy of the music. These four varied compositions could not have been played by anyone other than Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Cecil McBee, and Tony Williams with anywhere near the same results. This is a fresh, bold masterpiece that sounds like it was recorded yesterday rather than 44 years ago. Remastered by Rudy Van Gelder from the original analog tapes. (Blue Note Records)

Steve Kuhn: Life's Backward Glances- Solo & Quartet (CD: ECM, 3 CDs) This collection brings together three much sought-after recordings by Steve Kuhn: the solo piano album Ecstasy (recorded 1974), and two quartet albums. Motility (1977) features the band of the same name with saxophonist Steve Slagle in the front line, while Playground (1979) is the album that introduced the Steve Kuhn-Sheila Jordan Quartet. Singer Jordan is of course one of the great jazz vocalists, and this was an inspired teaming. Kuhn himself is a superlative pianist of vast gifts; each of these recordings illuminates another aspect of his work. Of these three discs only Ecstasy was previously available on compact disc, and then only in Japan. Motility and Playground here receive their first CD releases. (ECM Records)

 | Steve Kuhn Trio w / Joe Lovano: Mostly Coltrane (CD: ECM) A recording that pays tribute to a musician of towering importance and for Steve Kuhn an album of powerful memories. For two months in 1960, Kuhn, then just 21 years old, was the pianist in John Coltranes quartet: an unforgettable experience for a young musician, to embark each night into jazz of such torrential emotional intensity. Half-a-century later, joined by a team of gifted collaborators playing at the top of their form, Kuhn rechannels the energies of the era in an album of astonishing invention and wild beauty. Kuhn and Joe Lovano improvise gloriously together, riding the surging waves of Joey Barons polyrhythms, in a programme of tunes written by or strongly associated with Coltrane. Tracks include Welcome, Song of Praise, Central Park West, Spiritual and more. Recorded December 2008 at New Yorks Avatar Studio. (ECM Records)
