This release contains two hard to find and pretty expensive John Handy III albums In The Vernacular and No Coast Jazz plus for the first time on CD we are pleased to present the classic John Handy album Jazz. Plus all but one track from the Charles Mingus album Ah Hum featuring the mighty John Handy III on alto sax.
Its always good to feature a living legend in our Classic Albums series and here we are honouring alto sax giant John Handy III. John Handy came up in the 1950s playing with Charles Mingus on a number of his classic albums of the period including Mingus Dynasty, Blues & Roots and Ah Hum from which we feature all but one track on our Three Classic Albums Plus release. Primarily known as an alto sax player, Handy was also proficient on tenor and baritone sax, saxello, clarinet and oboe. On our selections from the late 1950s and early 1960s on Roulette, Handy is heard as leader in both Quartet and Quintet formations. His most acclaimed album came in the mid sixties with his performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1966 and he went on to release many fine albums for labels such as Columbia, Impulse and Warner Bros. (AVID Entertainment) Price: £8.99
John Handy's performance at the 1965 Monterey Jazz Festival was a sensation and arguably the high point of his career. Using a quintet that included violinist Michael White, guitarist Jerry Hahn, bassist Don Thompson, and drummer Terry Clarke (all of whom were unknown young musicians at the time), he played two lengthy songs: the 27-minute "If Only We Knew", and the near 20-minute long "Spanish Lady". The two extended tracks are followed by another lengthy performance, "Tears of Ole Miss", which was recorded two years later at the Village Vanguard and features such stars as Pat Martino and Bobby Hutcherson. Don Ellis (tp), Jaki Byard (p, as), Al Francis (vib), Ron Carter (b), Charlie Persip (d)
Additional tracks on the CD are from Jazz Jamboree 1962, recorded live with Polish musicians in Warsaw. (Discovery Records) Price: £25.99
Digitally remastered and slipcased with extensive new liner notes. (Proper Music) Price: £14.99
vibraphone. Bursting onto the embryonic free jazz scene he made a real impact being voted New Star of 1962 in the prestigious Down Beat critics poll. Recorded in 1975 in Philadelphia - Walts distinctive melodic and rhythmic approach was complemented by his unique timbre created though the use of specially treated rubber mallets to produce a plush, warm and yet crisp sound. Featuring Chicago bassist Wilbur Ware and fellow Philadelphian Andrew Cyrille, creating a trio par excellence. Originally released on the Why Not label this album fell into obscurity until Candid Records Alan Bates acquired the label in the late 1990s. In 2009 Candid bring these fantastic recordings back from the brink. (Proper Music) Price: £10.99
Perhaps not the first name that springs to mind when we think of jazz vibes players, nonetheless our latest (unsung) jazz hero, Dave Pike had an amazing career starting with his debut performance in 1958 with the Paul Bley Quartet. Our first two releases find Dave in a more traditional vibes mode, but take a look at the pianist on Pike's Peak and it will indicate how well he was thought of back then, none other than the legendary Bill Evans joins Dave at his "steamtable" for a fine set of almost "jamming session" intensity. "Besame Mucho" here points to the direction Pike was heading in for our final two albums, namely down South America way for a brace of the finest Latin flavoured jazz available! Artists Dave Pike has worked with include Herbie Mann, Kenny Clarke, Curtis Counce, Harold Land, Elmo Hope, Dexter Gordon, Tommy Flanagan, Paul Bley and of course, Bill Evans. Born in Brooklyn to either Sudanese or Caribbean parents, (it seems unclear which??), Ahmed Abdul-Malik was born either with that name or changed it from Jonathan Tim? Given the musical route he was later to take, it would seem likely that the Sudanese parentage story may well be accurate! He began taking musical lessons from a very early age and was enrolled in the Vardi School of Music where he was taught violin, viola, piano, cello, bass and tuba. He began his professional musical career playing hard bop bass before recording a string of ground breaking Middle Eastern flavoured albums where he was featured playing the oud (a double stringed, unfretted Middle Eastern lute). This blend of jazz and Middle Eastern music became very popular at the time and the albums which we feature here on our 2CD set were critically lauded at the time and over the years have come to be appreciated as way ahead of their time in their blend of jazz and what we now call "world music". Artists Malik has played with include John Coltrane, Johnny Griffin, Randy Weston, Art Blakey and Thelonious Monk. (AVID Entertainment) Price: £8.99

"Elvin is the beat of life itselfWhen I hear Elvin's music I hear the future." So said guitarist Carlos Santana in 2004 when he heard that drummer Elvin Jones had died. The rock star's comments signal Jones' importance. Born in Pontiac, Michigan in 1927, Jones' playing lifted the drum set out of the rhythm section and into the frontline. He could control the pulse of a band while at the same time pepper the music with melodic accents, creating solos that were both strong and sensitive.
For his MPS recording in February 1978, he brought along his Elvin Jones Jazz Machine a quintet with the somewhat unusual line-up of two saxophones, guitar, bass, and drums. The band continued to be one of the most popular in jazz on into and through the 1990's. (Proper Music) Price: £12.99
