Wayne Shorter: All Or Nothing At All (CD: Charly)
Saxophonist Wayne Shorter's early work is already marked by clear melodic lines, superb timing, pure tone and his skills as elegant jazz composer. These excellent Vee Jay recordings feature Shorter on dates (1959-61) with distinguished personnel, including trumpets Freddie Hubbard/ Lee Morgan, pianists Wynton Kelly/ Cedar Walton, bassists Paul Chambers/ Bob Cranshaw, and drummers Jimmy Cobb/ Art Blakey. Confident blowing of impressive authority, Shorter demonstrates on pieces like "I Didn't Know What Time It Was," "Down in the Depths," "Blues A La Carte," and "Second Genesis" just why he has been such a gifted and influential jazz talent. (Andrew Clark, Editor, Riffs & Choruses: A New Jazz Anthology. Continuum Publishing.)

Wayne Shorter: Ju Ju (CD: Blue Note RVG)
One of the most exciting and innovative voices in modem jazz, Wayne Shorter was in his final weeks with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers before joining Miles Davis when he recorded this exceptional album with John Coltrane's Rolls Royce rhythm section. His angular improvisations and unique compositions take a left turn at every opportunity, but Shorter makes it all work magnificently. (Blue Note Records)

Wayne Shorter: Speak No Evil (CD: Blue Note RVG)Wayne Shorter: Speak No Evil (CD: Blue Note RVG)
Wayne Shorter's third masterpiece recorded for Blue Note in 1964 with bandmembers Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Elvin Jones. Wayne's writing and playing is, as always, incandescent and cutting-edge. "Speak No Evil," "Witch Hunt" and "Infant Eyes" have become jazz standards. This magical session is capped off with a previously unissued alternate take of "Dance Cadaverous." (Blue Note Records)

Wayne Shorter: The Soothsayer (CD: Blue Note RVG)
Although not released until 1979, this March 1965 session by Wayne Shorter is a classic. The three-horn front line inspires Shorter as a composer and arranger, and Freddie Hubbard and James Spaulding are a fiery pair of soloists. The rhythm section features the unique combination of McCoy Tyner and Tony Williams. From the intricate darting “Angola” to the melodic beauty of “Lady Day,” this album is just further confirmation of Shorter’s genius as a saxophonist and a composer. (Blue Note Records)

Wayne Shorter: The All Seeing Eye (CD: Blue Note RVG)Wayne Shorter: The All Seeing Eye (CD: Blue Note RVG)
Shorter's musical depiction of the birth of the world is one of the most inspired moments in the discography of the then-member of the Miles Davis quintet alongside Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter who also feature. The most adventurous of the albums he cut for Blue Note in the mid-sixties, the concept of this high voltage octet- opening with the title tune, representing God's observance of the universe before his act of creation- is ambitious and challenging.

Shifting from the dramatic ('Genesis') through the beautiful ('Face Of The Deep') to the conflictive ('Chaos'), Shorter's largest acoustic outfit he'd worked with at that time- which included Hubbard, Grachan Moncur III and Shorter's brother Alan on flugelhorn- play expressively, with fire, grace and not always in conventional solos but in intriguing ensembles that convey the drama of a most remarkable story.

Wayne Shorter: Super Nova (CD: Blue Note- US Import)Wayne Shorter: Super Nova (CD: Blue Note- US Import)
Hot on the heels of Miles' 'In A Silent Way' and 'Bitches Brew' and a kind of prelude to Weather Report, 'Super Nova' finds Shorter entirely on soprano and in the company of artists used by Miles for his pioneering ventures into jazz-rock-fusion: guitarist John McLaughlin, pianist Chick Corea and drummer Jack DeJohnette in addition to bassist Miroslav Vitous. Vocalist Maria Booker's emotional tears-of-joy contribution to Jobim's 'Dindi' reinforces the spontaneity of the session, which is electric in both sound and in feeling.

Wayne Shorter's musical expression is as spontaneous, imaginative, and compelling today as at any time in his illustrious career.
