Wes Montgomery: Portrait Of Wes (CD: Riverside- US Import)
Wes Montgomery's last sessions for Riverside late in 1963 marked a return to the organ trio format he always enjoyed. But the results had not yet been issued when the company ceased operations. This LP (now on CD), released during a brief attempt to resume, was assembled without any input from either the artist or his producer. Thus the issued version of "Moanin'" was not one Wes liked and several liner credit errors went uncorrected [for example, the actual composer of "Lolita" is Barry Harris and the tune "Movin' Along" is an entirely different blues also written by Montgomery and later titled "Blues Riff"]. Nonetheless these are strong earthy performances in an always hard to find album that was only fleetingly available when originally issued. (Fantasy, Inc.)

Wes Montgomery: Incredible Jazz Guitar (CD: Riverside Keepnews Collection)
A dazzling display of the unorthodox technique and emotional power that combined to make Montgomery a literally "incredible" artist. Ever since its initial release in 1960, this album has been a consensus choice of musicians, critics, and knowledgeable listeners as a matchless example of the talents of one of the finest jazz instrumentalists of all times. Wes Montgomery: The Incredible Jazz Guitar Of (Vinyl LP: Riverside/ Craft Recordings)Wes Montgomery: The Incredible Jazz Guitar Of (Vinyl LP: Riverside/ Craft Recordings)
Originally released on Riverside in 1960, The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery was recorded over just two days at the Reeves Sound Studios in New York City. Joining guitarist Wes are Tommy Flanagan (piano), Percy Heath (bass) and his brother Albert Heath (drums), one of the smallest groups Wes would record with during the course of his career. Yet what stands out more than anything are two innovations from Wes; his thumb picking playing style and the use of octaves.

Both fans and critics have lauded this album as the pinnacle of his studio work. It has been described variously as it burst onto the US scene in 1960 like a benign hurricane, and it still sounds like a gale 50 years later and this established him as the most formidable modern guitarist of the era and eventually its most influential. The album remains one of the most revered in jazz circles and should be an essential addition to any jazz collection. (Universal Music)

Wes Montgomery: Impressions Of Paris (CD: Recall, 2 CDs)

Price:  £9.99

Wes Montgomery redefined what it was possible to do with a guitar in the jazz world. His unconventional playing style, using primarily his thumb rather than a plectrum or his fingers, gave him an unmistakable sound that has often been imitated, but has never been equaled.

This album comprises three of the relatively few live recordings that exist of the great man at work - all of which originate in Paris. Disc One comprises the famous Impressions and Solitude albums recorded for Affinity in 1965 - his most creative period with Verve - while Disc Two features a blistering concert from the Theatre des Champs Elysees in the same year with the famous line-up of Mabern, Harper and Lovelace bolstered by the appearance of Jimmy Griffin on sax. Wes Montgomery: The NDR Hamburg Studio Recordings (CD & BluRay: Jazzline)
The American guitarist Wes Montgomery was one of the greats of jazz. For all friends of this style-defining musician and beyond, Jazzline presents the NDR Hamburg Studio Recordings for the first time and thus never before published. In addition to Wes Montgomery, the musicians Johnny Griffin, Ronnie Scott, Ronnie Ross, Martial Solal, Hans Koller, Michel Gaudry and Ronnie Stephenson took part in this session. A fascinating line-up! There is also a 34 minute Blu-ray of the band's rehearsals as a bonus, which includes five of the tracks.

In the spring of 1965 this outstanding guitarist had only three more years to live, as in 1968 Wes Montgomery passed away after suffering a heart attack. The European concerts, particularly the happy hours spent at the NDR-Jazzworkshop on April 30, 1965 in Hamburg, were probably among the best memories Wes Montgomery had of himself and of the great art he mastered so well. Simply a must have album! (Proper Music)
