Woody Herman: The Woody Herman Story (CD: Proper, 4 CDs)
Multi-talented Woody Herman led bands for over 50 years, through which he expressed his musical philosophy, although he rarely wrote for them. Several hundreds of musicians passed through the ranks of his bands though even those with previous reputations were not to achieve true greatness until they had done their stint with Woody. Woody Herman's bands offered the best of hard swinging exciting music, that was filled with good humour, delight and above all enthusiasm. (Proper Records)

Woody Herman: Finest Hour (CD: Verve)Woody Herman: Finest Hour (CD: Verve)
The music of bandleader and clarinettist Woody Herman took the kind of popular swing Goodman, Shaw and Miller were famous for and amalgamated it with an ambitious, Ellington-inspired conception and featured musicians keen to embrace the adventurous new bebop music when that came along in the mid forties. Featuring the million-selling hit 'Woodchopper's Ball' from 1939 and many tracks featuring his exciting First and Third Herds, 'Finest Hour' covers much (if not all) that is important in the bandleader's oeuvre. Many familiar names grace these sides, notably arranger Neal Hefti, vibraphonist Red Norvo, saxophonists Bill Perkins, Flip Phillips and Sal Nistico, plus trumpeters Pete Candoli and Shorty Rogers, not forgetting the trombone of Kai Winding.

Herman's charts were adventurous, highly inventive, fiercely dynamic and furiously swinging. The live cuts here are particularly exuberant, ear-bending examples. 'Blowin' Up A Storm' does just that and kicks off with a lustrous solo from the leader. Three tracks, including a breathless 'Caldonia' from 1963, feature the 'Fourth Herd'. His significant 'Second Herd' formed in 1946, the one that featured Getz, Sims and Chaloff, and the one that gave birth to Jimmy Giuffre's 'Four Brothers', is absent here but you can't have everything. Herman's Sinatra-ish vocal on 'Early Autumn' from 1952 is no replacement for Getz's famously cool and lyrical tenor treatment three years earlier but nicely delivered and worth hearing, as is the rest of an enjoyable and well-filled retrospective.
