Yusef Lateef: Yusef's Mood- Complete 1957 Sessions (CD: Fresh Sound, 4 CDs)Yusef Lateef: Yusef's Mood- Complete 1957 Sessions (CD: Fresh Sound, 4 CDs)
In 1957 Yusef Lateef had become an influential presence on the Detroit jazz scene and, playing tenor sax and flute, was leading a regular combo: Curtis Fuller (tb), Hugh Lawson (p), Ernie Farrow (b) & Louis Hayes (d). Conversion to Islam fuelled an interest in oriental sounds and he was already experimenting with Eastern instruments which are occasionally in evidence here.

Four CD digitally remastered set with 32 page booklet. Detroit's finest captured during a highly productive and busy year. (Discovery Records)

Yusef Lateef: The Centaur And The Phoenix (CD: Riverside- US Import)
The full force of Yusef Lateef’s probing musical personality made itself known on this stunning 1960 date. Lateef assembled an unusual nine-piece band, with three brass, three striking reeds (baritone sax, bassoon, and whichever of four instruments the leader might be blowing at the moment), and three rhythm. Among the ranks of the personnel are established stars Clark Terry and Curtis Fuller, the then-unknown Joe Zawinul, and such journeymen deserving of wider recognition as Richard Williams and Tate Houston. In addition to Lateef’s typically deep compositions, there are an ambitious pair by Charles Mills and the first recorded writing (before his debut as a player) by a teenaged Kenny Barron. Two bonus tracks with percussion and voices were originally released as a 45-RPM single only. (Fantasy, Inc.)

Yusef Lateef: Cry!-Tender (CD: New Jazz- US Import)
The oboe, a double-reed creature that bites inattentive handlers, made its first appearance as a member of Yusef Lateef’s performing instrument collection in 1959, on this album. Lateef, to the interest of many and no one’s surprise, had become the maverick’s master, as he already was of the tenor saxophone and the flute. Another color had been added to the palette of an artist whose life has been an expansion of possibilities in the art of wedding the exotic to the fundamental. A collection that brings moodiness, lyricism, down-home earnestness, and the whiff of sandalwood into fine balance, Cry!--Tender is one of the jewels of the early discography of a musician of passion, integrity, and scope. Yusef Lateef: Cry!-Tender (Vinyl LP: Wax Time)Yusef Lateef: Cry!-Tender (Vinyl LP: Wax Time)
Although his main instruments were the tenor saxophone and the flute, Yusef Lateef was known for his innovative blending of jazz with Asian music. In addition to the oboe and bassoon (which are both unusual in jazz), he played various other instruments.

Lateef began recording as a leader in 1957 for Savoy Records, a non-exclusive association that continued until 1959. The earliest of his albums for the Prestige subsidiary New Jazz overlap his Savoy Recordings. Cry! - Tender was one of these early albums for New Jazz, recorded during this initial period of Lateef's career and the only session he ever recorded with trumpeter Lonnie Hillyer.

180g vinyl - limited edition audiophile pressing - the complete LP + 2 bonus tracks. (Proper Music)

Yusef Lateef: Eastern Sounds (CD: Essential Jazz Classics)
Complete quartet studio sessions by Yusef Lateef that feature pianist Barry Harris plus 1 bonus track, two tracks appear for the first time ever on CD. Yusef Lateef (1920-2013) was one of the first Afro-American jazz musicians to embrace the Islamic faith. Although his main instruments were the tenor saxophone and the flute, he was known for his innovative blending of jazz with Asian music. His "Eastern"' influences are clearly audible on Eastern Sounds (Moodsville MVST- 22), which is presented here in its entirety along with all his other quartet recordings with iconic pianist Barry Harris. Among them are two tracks, "Cookin'" and "Marching Piper Blues", which were only issued on a hard to find single and appear here for the first time ever on CD. A rare studio reading of "Brother John", one of Lateef's best known compositions has been added as a further bonus. (Proper Music)

Yusef Lateef: Into Something (CD: New Jazz- US Import)
Yusef Lateef’s final Prestige/New Jazz session was a reunion of four musicians nurtured in the elevated atmosphere of Detroit’s modern jazz scene. With bassist Herman Wright and drummer Elvin Jones joining the leader for three rambunctious trio tracks, and the eloquent Barry Harris’s piano added on four more, the date displays the harmonic sophistication and rhythmic daring of all parties. A stunning example of Lateef’s skill on flute and oboe as well as tenor sax, yet less exotic than most of his efforts, Into Something is his ultimate hard-bop statement, a classic of both the genre and still-active Lateef’s long career.
