Yusef Lateef: The Centaur And The Phoenix (CD: Riverside- US Import) The full force of Yusef Lateef’s probing musical personality made itself known on this stunning 1960 date. Lateef assembled an unusual nine-piece band, with three brass, three striking reeds (baritone sax, bassoon, and whichever of four instruments the leader might be blowing at the moment), and three rhythm. Among the ranks of the personnel are established stars Clark Terry and Curtis Fuller, the then-unknown Joe Zawinul, and such journeymen deserving of wider recognition as Richard Williams and Tate Houston. In addition to Lateef’s typically deep compositions, there are an ambitious pair by Charles Mills and the first recorded writing (before his debut as a player) by a teenaged Kenny Barron. 	Yusef Lateef: Cry Tender (CD: New Jazz- US Import) The oboe, a double-reed creature that bites inattentive handlers, made its first appearance as a member of Yusef Lateef’s performing instrument collection in 1959, on this album. Lateef, to the interest of many and no one’s surprise, had become the maverick’s master, as he already was of the tenor saxophone and the flute. Another color had been added to the palette of an artist whose life has been an expansion of possibilities in the art of wedding the exotic to the fundamental. Yusef Lateef: Into Something (CD: New Jazz- US Import) Yusef Lateef’s final Prestige/New Jazz session was a reunion of four musicians nurtured in the elevated atmosphere of Detroit’s modern jazz scene. With bassist Herman Wright and drummer Elvin Jones joining the leader for three rambunctious trio tracks, and the eloquent Barry Harris’s piano added on four more, the date displays the harmonic sophistication and rhythmic daring of all parties. A stunning example of Lateef’s skill on flute and oboe as well as tenor sax, yet less exotic than most of his efforts, Into Something is his ultimate hard-bop statement, a classic of both the genre and still-active Lateef’s long career. 	Yusef Lateef: Contemplation (CD: Charly) Multi-instrumentalist Yusef Lateef has worked with Gillespie, Mingus, Adderley and Eldridge. This Vee Jay recording (1960) features him on tenor sax, supported by excellent pianist Barry Harris, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes, together with cornetist Nat Adderley. There is unison ensemble playing, unremitting drive in the rhythm team, and fine, meaty solos from both horns. Lateef's is a distinctive sax style -- full, broad, caressively warm. Check out "Teef" (blues), outstanding ballad "I Need You" and five bonus alternate takes. Lovely throaty, mellow stuff. A well presented album from Charly. 	Yusef Lateef: Live In London (CD: Harkit) Here's Yusef Lateef's fine example of performing at Ronnie Scott's Club In the 1960s when he was at the zenith of his musical career. Yusef was, about this time, starting to express his militant tendencies both politically and musically and this is clearly demonstrated In the musical outings! This previously unreleased 75-mlnute recording took place at the club around midnight New Year's eve 1965 playing us through to 1966. His truly unique and distinctive style has never sounded better on this selection of standards and Lateef originals. (Harkit Records) Price: £13.99
